CELPIP Writing Task 1 Tips

For Writing Task 1, you will compose an email within a 27-minute. Your email should be concise, between 150 and 200 words. The objective is to effectively share information, explain situations, or make requests in a coherent and structured manner.

  1. Setting the Right Tone from the Start

Begin with an appropriate greeting. Think about how you greet people when you meet them. This initial interaction sets the tone and gives the recipient a first impression of you.

2.  Formal Greetings

Depending on the context, your email may need to be formal. For instance:

- Opt for a formal salutation when addressing someone you do not know personally or in a position of authority. Examples include: "Dear Mr. Smith" or "Dear Professor Johnson."

3. Informal Greetings

In less formal situations, such as emailing a colleague or a friend, a more relaxed greeting is suitable:

- You might say, "Hello David," or "Hi Sara."

Tips

If you do not know the recipient's name and the context is formal, a generic but respectful greeting like "Dear Sir/Madam," or "To whom it may concern," is appropriate.

 Introduction & Purpose Statement

After the greeting, introduce yourself briefly. There’s no need for a detailed biography—just a simple introduction. Then, clearly state the purpose of your email.

For instance: "Hi Sarah, My name is Ali, and I’m writing this email to express my concern about..."

- If expressing dissatisfaction: "I’m writing this email to express my dissatisfaction regarding..."

Mind the Word Count

Aim for a word count between 170 to 180 words to ensure your content is sufficient without being excessive. Exceeding 200 words, such as writing 250 words, may result in a loss of points. On the test, it counts the words for you as below, it also has the spell check function. However, it will only spell check the English words, not the meaning. You will still need to proofread if the meaning of the words fit in the context of your writing.

Closing Statement

Conclude with a polite closing statement:

For instance: "Thanks for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you!" Follow this with "Sincerely" and your name.

By following these tips, you can ensure your email is well-structured, clear, and effective.
